Biography of Ilan Pappé

Ilan Pappé was born on 7 November 1954 in Haifa to a couple of German Jews who arrived in today’s Israel in the 1930s to escape the first Nazi persecutions; at 18 he did compulsory military service with the Israeli army and was employed in the Heights of Golan during the Yom Kippur War. In 1978 he graduated from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in 1984 he obtained a PhD from the University of Oxford under the guidance of Albert Hourani and George Owen, dedicating himself in particular to the relationship between the United Kingdom and the birth of Israel, a theme that would accompany him throughout his life.

Between 1984 and 2006 he was a senior lecturer at the Department of Middle Eastern History and the Department of Political Science of the University of Haifa, while from 1992 to 2000 he Ilan Pappé - Lannan Foundation!
